Nazlini Purple Heart Community

Nazlini, a community on the Navajo Nation, was officially designated as a Purple Heart Community in July 2025, joining other communities on the reservation and across the country in honoring and supporting Purple Heart recipients, particularly those who were wounded or killed in combat. The designation was celebrated with a 5K run, a bike ride, and ceremonies recognizing the sacrifices of veterans.

What is a Purple Heart Community?

  • A Purple Heart Community is a town, city, or reservation that officially recognizes and honors its veterans who have been wounded or killed in combat.
  • The designation is a way to express gratitude and ensure that these brave individuals are remembered and supported for their sacrifices.

Nazlini’s Designation

  • Event:

The celebration for Nazlini’s designation as a Purple Heart Community took place in July 2025.

  • Participants:

Speaker Crystalyne Curley, Nazlini Chapter officials, the Nazlini Chapter Veterans Organization, and community members participated in the event.

  • Activities:

The celebration included a sunrise 5K fun run/walk honoring Purple Heart veterans and a Purple Heart Bike Run from Window Rock to Nazlini.

  • Purpose:

The events highlighted the importance of compassion, respect, and support for veterans, with a specific focus on advocating for mental wellness and healthcare for those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Recognition Efforts

  • This initiative is part of a larger effort to have all 110 Veterans Organizations on the Navajo Nation recognized as Purple Heart Communities, with the ultimate goal of becoming a “Purple Heart Nation,” according to Baldwin.
  • The placement of Purple Heart signs on the community’s northern and southern boundaries serves as a physical reminder of the designation and the commitment to honoring veterans.
